How to Select a Dental Hygienist School near North Bend Washington

North Bend WA dental hygienist with patientSelecting the ideal dental hygienist school near North Bend WA is an essential first step toward launching your new career in dentistry. But before you can make your choice, you need to evaluate and compare your school options. There is far more to completing your due diligence than selecting the training with the most affordable tuition or enrolling in the program that is closest to your residence. There are other important issues to consider as well, such as the college’s accreditation and reputation. Dental hygienists generally earn an Associate Degree, as compared to a certificate usually earned by assistants, and can take anywhere from 2 to 3 years to accomplish. Naturally with the lengthier training of a hygienist comes more cost. We will discuss all of these issues and supplemental questions that you need to be asking the dental hygienist colleges you are analyzing later in this article. But first, let’s explore the roles of dental hygienists and the training programs offered.

The Function of Dental Hygienists

North Bend WA pediatric dental hygienist with patientWhen contrasting the job of a dental assistant to that of a hygienist, the most significant difference is undoubtedly that the hygienist works more independently. Dental assistants work with and assists the North Bend WA practice and the dentists. Hygienists, while also supporting the practice, work with the patients more on a one-to-one basis. They are usually the initial person a patient interacts with when called from the waiting room. They examine each patient’s gums and teeth and present their results to the dentists. They also may carry out basic procedures. Depending on state law, a hygienist’s duties may include:

  • Removing stains, tartar and plaque
  • Applying fluoride treatments
  • Applying sealants and polishing teeth
  • Educating patients regarding oral care
  • Taking X-rays and developing film
  • Removing sutures and applying fillings

In order to be licensed in almost all states, dental hygienists must graduate from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA) accredited dental hygiene program. They also must pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam in addition to passing any state licensure examinations. After they have fulfilled these requirements they are deemed fully licensed and can add the “RDH” designation to their names, signifying Registered Dental Hygienist.

Dental Hygienist Education Options

Due to the increased responsibility in contrast to an assistant, dental hygienists working in North Bend WA dental practices are generally required to hold an Associate Degree in dental hygiene rather than a certificate. These programs can take anywhere from two to as long as three years to complete and must be accredited by the CDA in nearly every state. They are offered in trade and vocational schools as well as community colleges. And in addition to classroom studies learning the fundamentals of dental hygiene, there will be a practical aspect to the training as well| A number of programs also sponsor internships with local dental practices or dentists.

Online Dental Hygienist Programs

attending dental hygienist school online in North Bend WAChoosing an online dental hygienist program might be a great option for receiving your training. Just remember that the classes will not be 100% online, since there will be a clinical component to your training. But the remainder of your classes will be provided by means of your desktop computer in the comfort of your North Bend WA home or anywhere else on your tablet or laptop. For those working while attending college, online dental classes make education much more obtainable. Many may even have lower tuition costs than their on-campus counterparts. And added expenses for items like commuting, books and school supplies may be lessened also. The practical training can often be completed at a community dental practice or in an on-campus lab. With both the clinical and online training, everything required to obtain the proper education is furnished. If you have the dedication for this method of education, you might find that attending an dental hygienist online program is the right option for you.

Issues to Cover With Dental  Hygienist Programs

As we discussed at the beginning of this article, a number of students start by checking out the location and the cost of the schools. Maybe they search for several online options as well. Although these may be important initial considerations, there are a few additional questions that you should ask of the colleges you are reviewing in order to make an informed decision. Toward that end, we have furnished a list of questions to help you with your due diligence and ultimate selection of the right dental hygienist school for you.

Is the Dental Program Accredited? There are several valid reasons why you should only choose an accredited dental hygienist program. If you are planning to become certified or licensed, then accreditation is a requirement in nearly all states. In order to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination, your dental program must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps establish that the education you get is comprehensive and of the highest quality. North Bend WA employers often prefer or require that job applicants are graduates of accredited schools. And finally, if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, usually they are not offered for non-accredited programs.

Is Enough Practical Training Provided? Practical or clinical training is an essential component of every dental training program. This is true for the online college options as well. Most dental hygienist programs have associations with regional dental practices and clinics that provide practical training for their students. It’s not only essential that the program you choose provides enough clinical hours but also provides them in the type of practice that you subsequently want to work in. For example, if you have an interest in a career in pediatric dentistry, make sure that the college you select offers clinical rotation in a local North Bend WA dental office that specializes in dental care for children.

Are Internships Available? Find out if the dental colleges you are evaluating have internship programs. Internships are probably the most effective means to get hands-on, clinical experience in a real dental practice. They help students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students form working relationships in the professional dental community. And they are attractive on resumes too.

Is Job Placement Help Furnished? Most students that have graduated from dental hygienist programs need help obtaining their first job. Find out if the colleges you are considering have job placement programs, and what their job placement rates are. Colleges with high job placement rates are likely to have good reputations within the North Bend WA dental community in addition to broad networks of contacts where they can position their students for employment or internships.

Are Classes Small? Check with the schools you are evaluating how large typically their classrooms are. The smaller classes tend to offer a more personal environment for learning where students have greater access to the teachers. Conversely, large classes often are impersonal and provide little individualized instruction. If feasible, ask if you can attend a couple of classes at the North Bend WA dental hygienist school that you are most interested in so that you can witness first hand the degree of interaction between instructors and students before making a commitment.

What is the Total Expense of the Program? Dental hygiene colleges can differ in cost based on the duration of the program and the amount of clinical training provided. Other variables, for instance the reputations of the colleges and whether they are private or public also have an impact. But along with the tuition there are other substantial costs which can add up. They can include expenses for such things as commuting and textbooks as well as school materials, equipment and supplies. So when examining the cost of colleges, don’t forget to add all of the expenses associated with your education. Most schools have financial assistance offices, so make sure to find out what is available as far as loans, grants and scholarships in the North Bend WA area.

Are the Classes Accessible? Before enrolling in a dental hygienist school, you need to confirm that the hygienist or assistant program offers classes that suit your schedule. This is especially true if you will be working while acquiring your education and must attend classes near North Bend WA at nights or on weekends. And even if you choose an online school, you will still need to schedule your practical training classes. Also, while making your inquiries, ask what the make-up policy is if you should have to miss any classes due to work, illness or family emergencies.

North Bend, Washington

Since the Weyerhaeuser sawmill closed, North Bend has become a bedroom community for Seattle, Washington about 30 miles to the west. The town was made famous by David Lynch's television series Twin Peaks. North Bend is home to Nintendo North Bend, the main North American production facility and distribution center for the video game console manufacturer Nintendo.

The Native Americans who inhabited the Snoqualmie Valley, led by Chief Patkanim, sided with settlers in the wars of the 1850s and, with the Treaty of Point Elliott, lost such title as settlers acknowledged. Some of the soldiers in those wars, such as the brothers and sisters Kellogg, established cabins near their blockhouses; however the first permanent settler in the valley was Jeremiah Borst, in 1858.[5]

In 1865, Matts Peterson homesteaded the site that ultimately became North Bend.[6] Deeply in debt, he sold the property to Borst and moved east of the mountains. Borst wrote to Will Taylor, who had left the area to go mining in California, and offered him the Peterson place in exchange for labor. Taylor returned and prospered as a farmer and operator of a trading post. He platted North Bend as Snoqualmie[7] but because another nearby town had the same name, renamed it Mountain View.[8] However, the Post Office Department objected to the name Mountain View, so it was renamed North Bend after its location near the north bend of the South Fork of the Snoqualmie River.[6] North Bend was officially incorporated on March 12, 1909.

North Bend is located at 47°29′38″N 121°47′10″W / 47.49389°N 121.78611°W / 47.49389; -121.78611 (47.493831, -121.786247).[9] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.31 square miles (11.16 km2), of which, 4.27 square miles (11.06 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) is water.[1]
